What are the right Settings for Your Photography Business?

So you know how your shutter speed, aperture and ISO work together to get a proper exposure. Did you know that your business has 3 settings that you need to get right in order for your business to work properly? You gotta know WHY you are in business, WHAT you are selling and WHO you are selling to. They all work together just like the settings on your camera.

WHY you are in business. So why are you in business as a photographer? Obviously you love photography but why turn that passion into a business? Get clear on Why you are in business first so that the business works for you and not you working for your business! Look at what you want to put into the business and what you are hoping or expecting to get out of the business:

  • How much time you want to put in your photography business?
  • How much money do you want to get out of it?
  • What kind of creative outlet your are expecting this to be?
  • Are you looking for relationships with other photographers/clients?

Make sure to write this down somewhere so that you can stay clear while you make the other decisions in your business.

Packages & Pricing: What you are selling. This is your list of packages and pricing. Obviously you need to understand what is included in each package and the pricing. There is a bit of psychology included in figuring this out but the basics are to make them simple to understand, limit the choices to a few options and be strategic on your pricing. You should understand your own packages and pricing well enough to know your gross margin (how much money do you get to add to your business each time you do a session) and your gross margin per hour? Most photographers are surprised to find out that they are making MUCH less than they had thought and sometimes find out one package is making all their profit and others need a serious overhaul.

Who is your Target Client?

You aren’t selling to everybody

  •  in your area. You need to know a bit out who it is that you are selling to and what makes them stand out. what is their income level,  age group, or certain lifestyle, which your target clients all have in common and separates them from the others in your area. You should know those demographics but if you really want to market well and differentiate from other photographers, you need to understand and be able to communicate the benefits that your target clients are interested in you as a photographer. Don’t get stuck telling your clients how many locations, hours and images they get. Talk about why they care about those things (lots of good image to choose from, plenty of time to not be rushed, different backgrounds to be able to use the images for a few things this year).

You’ve got to get all these 3 things working together.

Go through see if the settings of your photography business is working . If these don’t work together, there is no amount marketing, hard work or effort that will overcome the friction created by these not working together.
